This is a bowl featuring a "ridge-line" pattern, created using a traditional Japanese ceramic technique. The design is made by carving the surface of the clay with tools like spatulas or scrapers, forming raised ridges known as "shinogi". This technique is inspired by the ridged spine of a Japanese sword.
The term "shinogi wo kezuru" (literally “shaving the ridges”) comes from the image of swords clashing so fiercely that their ridges are worn down — a metaphor often used to describe intense battle.
By applying glaze over the carved ridges, subtle variations in color and texture emerge, giving each piece a unique and expressive character. This small bowl is no exception — its rich texture and refined finish make it a truly stunning piece.
